Description

Valerian – Valeriana officinalis L. – belongs to the Valerianaceaevalerian family, it is widely cultivate in China and Poland. Underground parts of the plant – valerian root – Valerianae radix – constitute a herbal raw material. The herbal raw material contains essential oil, sesquiterpenic acids, including valerenic acid, and tannins. The root of valerian has long history and many proofs of efficiency of actions, it has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Its properties were described by Hippocrates and later Galen as a remedy for insomnia. Valerian preparations are currently indicated for the treatment of restlessness (relief of mild nervous tension such as anxiety disorders, stress and excitability) and sleep disturbances. The mechanism of action has not been completely described. Valerianic acids along with Sesquiterpenoids are supposed to have an activity on the GABA system which regulates neuronal excitability.

The root of valerian also is a pharmacopeial raw material (FP X 07/2010:0453) and has EMA community mononograph (EMA/HMPC/150848/2015)

Functions

Toxicity and Contraindications:

Valerian has been classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) in the United States for food use; extracts and the root oil are used as flavor in food and beverage, the observed in vitro cytotoxicity of valepotriate compounds may not be relevant in vivo because of limited absorption.
